Zirconia crowns
Zirconia is a white, strong ceramic used instead of a metal framework. Badly damaged, root-filled or discoloured teeth are covered with a crown, restoring both appearance and chewing.
Who it is for
- Teeth with large fillings, fractures or cracks
- Root-filled teeth that need reinforcement
- People replacing older metal-based crowns
- Patients planning a bridge for a missing tooth
How it works
- Examination and shade: teeth and gums are checked and a shade matching your teeth is chosen.
- Preparation: under local anaesthesia the tooth is shaped to receive the crown.
- Impression and temporary: the impression goes to the lab while you wear a temporary tooth.
- Try-in and fitting: fit and colour are checked before the crown is cemented. The process usually takes one to two weeks.
Afterwards
Crowns do not decay, but the natural tooth and gum at the edges still need care. Daily brushing, floss or interdental brushes and a check-up every six months are recommended. If you grind at night, a protective guard may be advised.
Questions
How long do zirconia crowns last?
It depends on oral hygiene, chewing habits and regular check-ups. Well cared for crowns can be used for many years.
Is a lot of tooth removed?
The amount depends on the tooth and the chosen restoration. As much healthy tissue as possible is kept.
Can they be used on front teeth?
Yes. For front teeth, highly translucent zirconia or glass ceramic options are considered.
